DIY Storage Box Makeover!

Living in a small apartment one of the biggest challenges we face is storage space! Luckily we have two fairly large hall closets to hold all of our holiday decorations, camping gear and other less used items but it is not very practical for things we use on a regular basis. We’ve gone through and done a couple major purges getting rid of anything we haven’t been using and that has helped to de-clutter our living room and kitchen but our bedroom has stayed an issue for a while now.
I bought a bookshelf a few months ago to store all of my extra fabric (I admit it, I’m a fabric horder) which really helped me get back into sewing. I’m one of those people where if I don’t see it, I won’t use it. This solved the fabric issue but I still had a lot of crafty knick knacks either tucked away under the bed in boxes or cluttering the shelves of my bookcase. Looking back on it, I really should have taken a before photo of my shelves to show you how much of a difference these storage boxes actually made! It is huge. I now know where everything is and it is all much more accessible! It’s such a relief to finally get this storage problem over and done with.
To be honest, this isn’t much of a tutorial as it is just an inspiration to others who want to find a creative and unique way to organize their shelves! I found these white boxes at Ikea last weekend at around 5 bucks for a pack of two. We picked up two packs of the medium sized boxes and one pack of the the small size. I brought them home and realized I wanted to make them a bit more fun before I started loading them up with all my photos, fabric scraps and craft supplies so I broke out the black paint and started doing random designs on each of them.
I decided to keep it simple with black and white because there is already so much colour coming from that corner of our bedroom. It was starting to look a bit messy with all of the patterns and colours of the fabric so I wanted to give it a uniform look to make the shelves look more organized and put together.
It’s so funny how a little project like this can instantly make you feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders! I knew I wanted to come up with a solution for this part of our apartment for a while now but I didn’t realize how much of a difference it would make until I finally sat down and spent an afternoon sorting and putting things away. I know it’s all in my head, but I can’t help but feel as though our room feels a little bigger as well.
I hope this inspires you to tackle those pesty problem areas in your home as well! I have been working like a mad woman to finish up some more long overdo bedroom makeovers that I am so excited to share with you all!

Ps. I am looking to replace that blue chair below the bookcase. It is hard to see in the photos but it was a super cheap garage sale find a few years ago that is in desperate need of a replacement. Let me know if you have any suggestions! I am stumped.

  1. These look great! I really love how they look all together on your shelves. I was just thinking I need boxes like these for some extra craft stuff, now I am totally inspired to run out and get some and make them look awesome :)

    • Thanks! They were super easy to make. I painted them off and on for a couple hours while watching Netflix . I wish I could show you how much it cleaned up that space!

  2. This is an awesome idea! I love how you chose a black and white theme and then did fun designs. It definitely makes your fabric pop! This is very inspiring. I’ve got so much fabric, too, that I don’t know how to store/display. My big problem are fabric scraps. I really don’t want to throw them away on the off chance I need them someday, but it’s hard to keep them and not make things cluttered. So pretty!

    • Yeah I figured black and white was the best way to make it look fun but clean. And I know what you mean with fabric scraps!! I can’t get rid of them (because they come in handy so often) but they take up so much space. I have a full box on that shelf filled with them ;)

  3. This looks great! I bought a few storage boxes a while ago and they definitely help things out. I could still stand to do some serious organizing in my house though! One of these days…

  4. Those are adorable! I am still in process of finding ways to decorate my art classroom next year and this is perfect! I hate all of those childish gross rainbow plastic tubs. I swear to make my classroom adorable!

  5. Looks incredible now! I really appreciate knowing there is someone out there like me because it can be very frustrating to explain to my perfectionist mom ‘why cant i just use closets like everyone else!?’ “If I cant see it, I wont use it”–or I forget its there! It kinda just ‘happened’ to me after my second child. So THANK You for the empathy there.
Whih of course would lead to a HUGE Thank You for sharing the color idea: the fact that everything i keep out is craft supplies, fabric, & more, are all full of very different colours makes them an eye sore rather than stored well–THIS Black And White idea will fit PERFECTLY! You have brought hope to my hopeless state of shelving conditions! ;) Many many thanks again, Jeanine
